Your NCAA Conference Re-Alignment “Risk” Map – The Non Automatic Qualifiers Edition

2012 Small Conference College Risk Map

The tectonic re-alignments enveloping college football are limited to the big dogs…like Ronald Reagan’s economic theory, there’s a “Trickle-Down” effect.

With the pending dissolution of the WAC, and the seemingly imminent cancellation by the western teams that were going to join the Big East in 2013, this becomes an even more wide-open map in terms of land-grab potential than the “big boys” map is.

1) As we said on the “big boys” map, the Big East is in it’s death throes as a major conference.  Once Syracuse and Pittsburgh are gone, the Big East might as well split and merge with the MAC and Conference USA based on geography.

2) The Mountain West looks like it could become the leviathan of the little guys.  Think about it, Boise State is likely available, because you know they are going to bail on the Big East just like TCU did.  So are all the other schools in the Mountain and Pacific time zones that were headed for the Big East. Not to mention, Mormon Notre Dame BYU is still in play as well.

3) The MAC is in the next best shape, it really could become a “Mini-me” to the B1G Ten.

Time will only tell how long it takes before this map needs an update as well.

  1. So Northern Illinois plays in the Orange Bowl, huh?

The BCS has to be secretly hoping the Huskies (did you know their mascot was a Husky?) give Florida State somewhat of a battle.

No Oklahoma in a BCS Bowl but we do get to see them play against Johnny Football.

Oh, any my nominee for this year’s undeserving bowl? How about the Sun Bowl between 6-7 Ga Tech and 7-5 USC.

    1. This is what you get with a screwy BCS system. And yes, we know all about Northern Illinois…Besides, who really wants to see yet another BCS bowl under-performance by Oklahoma?

True story – Mr.s Dubsism works at the hotle here in Purdue-land where all the visiting football team stay. A few years back NIU came to town and beat Purdue. They sent the most awesome letter to the hotel basically saying “Hey, your great food and hospitality helped us kick you teams’s butt.”
